Secretary Blinken Says Iran Nuclear Threat Escalating

Warns the Middle Eastern nation is weeks away from a weapon.

In testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Iran is “weeks” away from having enough fissile material for a single nuclear weapon.

While issuing the warning, he also defended the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, saying the previous administration’s decision to abandon the accord has brought Iran closer to its nuclear objectives.

“That agreement was working by all objective accounts,” Secretary Blinken said. He stated that many Israeli colleagues have said that pulling out of the agreement was a mistake and that the treaty was succeeding at “preventing Iran from acquiring the fissile material necessary for a weapon.”

He continued,  “We’ve tested the other proposition, which was pulling out of the agreement, trying to exert more pressure. And we’ve also seen the result. And the result has been that that nuclear program, which had pushed back the breakout time to a year in terms of being able to produce fissile material for a weapon that’s now down to a matter of weeks.”

Negotiators in Vienna who have been trying to restore the nuclear deal have spent months with little accomplished and appear to be at a stalemate.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the president and his administration as the nuclear threat from Iran increases.
  • For Secretary Blinken to seek God’s direction as he evaluates the situation in the Middle East.
  • For discernment for U.S. military commanders and the Joint Chiefs as they advise the president and secretary of Defense.
